Pay Rise for Workers on Real Living Wage (October 2023)

Over 460,000 people working for 14,000 Real Living Wage employers throughout the country are set for a cost-of-living pay boost, as the Living Wage Foundation’s (LWF’s) rates rise to £13.15 an hour in London (£1.20 increase) and £12 an hour across the rest of the UK (£1.10 increase).

Set by the LWF, the Real Living Wage remains the only rate independently calculated and based on what people need to live on. This year the rate increased by 10% in the UK, reflecting persistently high costs for low-paid workers.

There is now a significant difference between the RLW and the National Minimum wage a full-time worker earning the new Real Living Wage would earn £3081 a year more than a worker earning the current government minimum.

The Workers (Predictable Terms and Conditions) Act

Expected to come into force in Autumn 2024, this act is currently under consultation, however could mean big changes for employers.

The Act will allow that if a worker's existing working pattern lacks predictability in terms of the hours they work, the times they work or the length of their contract, they will be able to make a formal request to change their working pattern to make it more predictable.

Once a worker has made their request, their business will be required to notify them of their decision within one month.

AI is a 'Co-Pilot' rather than a risk (Rishi Sunak)

At a speech on 26 October 2023, Rishi Sunak (Prime Minister) said “It’s important to recognise AI doesn’t just automate and take people’s jobs. A better way to think about it is as a co-pilot.”

The technology was compared to the industrial revolution, summarising that “they create more growth overall but it does mean that there are changes in the labour market.”

He said: “It’s hard to predict the exact evolution of everyone’s job and what we can do in government is make sure that we have a world-class education system.

“That is the best way that I can ensure that everyone in our country benefits from, not just AI, but everything that comes our way.”

Flexible Working Changes on the Horizon (2024)

The Government are expected to introduce new Flexible Working requirements:

  • Day 1 right to request (removing 26 weeks qualifying service requirement)
  • Requirement for employers to consult with the employee before rejecting their flexible working request
  • Employees will be entitled to make two statutory requests in any 12-month period (rather than the current one request per year)
  • Employers will need to deal with requests within two months (reduced from the current three months).
  • Removes the requirement for the employee to explain what effect, if any, the change requested would have on the employer and how that effect might be dealt with.

“Committed HR are a dream for small or growing businesses that need expert advice and guidance when it comes to HR matters. As a business owner, it really puts you at rest knowing that you have professional advice when needed, it's like having an HR department. In the short time we've been working together they have made a massive impact to our business and how we do things. Long may it continue.
